There is a moment on flights when the seatbelt sign dings on.

Sometimes it is expected. The captain warns you ahead of time “We are anticipating some turbulence shortly after takeoff.” Other times it catches you off guard, the plane jolting and your stomach tightening as the ground suddenly feels very far away.

You grip the armrest. Your heart races. You wonder how long this is going to last.

When the pilot’s calm voice comes over the speaker.

“We are experiencing some rough air as we climb through the clouds. This should be temporary. Once we get above the clouds, it should be smooth flying.”

Somehow, that voice changes everything.

The plane doesn’t immediately stop shaking. The clouds don’t instantly part. Fear loosens its grip though, because someone who knows what they are doing is in control.

That image has stayed with me during my difficult times because life with God often feels exactly like that.

The Climb is Often the Hardest Part

Takeoff is not always smooth.

In life, the climb, the transition, the waiting, the unknown, is often where the turbulence lives. It is where prayers feel unanswered. Where doors seem shut. Where clarity is clouded and fear feels louder than faith.

Scripture never promises us a turbulence free life. In fact, Jesus Himself said “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Notice He didn’t say if trouble comes. He said when.

Turbulence doesn’t mean something is wrong. It means you are moving. Planes don’t experience turbulence sitting safely at the gate. The shaking happens during ascent, when altitude is changing. When direction is set. When forward motion is happening whether it feels comfortable or not.

Sometimes the roughest seasons of our lives are proof that God is lifting us higher than we have ever been before.

Clouds Obscure Vision but Not Direction

When a plane flies through thick clouds, the passengers can’t see where they are going. The pilot knows though.

That is one of the hardest parts of walking by faith, we often lose visibility before we gain altitude.

The Bible reminds us “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7

Clouds don’t mean you are off course. They just mean you are temporarily unable to see what God is already navigating.

There are seasons where God does not explain Himself in detail. Not because He is withholding goodness, but because trust grows in the absence of sight.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

We want blue skies before we trust. God asks for trust inside the clouds.

The Pilot Knows What the Passengers Don’t

Most passengers don’t know the altitude, air pressure, or weather patterns. We don’t understand what is happening outside the cabin.

The pilot does though.

That is why when turbulence hits, the calm voice of the expert brings peace. Not because the problem disappears, but because confidence in who is in control replaces fear.

God is not surprised by our storms.

“Known to God are all His works from eternity.” Acts 15:18

He sees the full route. He knows how long the turbulence will last. He knows what altitude brings smoother air.

He knows when to climb higher, even when it feels uncomfortable for us.

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:9

Sometimes God allows turbulence not to harm us, but to lift us above something that would have stalled us at a lower altitude.

Turbulence is Temporary

One of the most reassuring things a pilot says is “This won’t last long.”

In life, it often feels like the shaking will never end. Scripture consistently reminds us that seasons change.

“Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” Psalm 30:5

“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” 2 Corinthians 4:17

Temporary discomfort does not cancel enteral purpose.

The turbulence that stretches your faith today may be the very thing that carries you into clarity tomorrow.

Faith is Staying Seated when Fear Says Panic

When turbulence hits, flight attendants don’t panic. They don’t run down the aisle screaming. They stay seated, buckled in, calm.

They have been though this before.

Faith works the same way. It is not the absence of fear, it is choosing not to let fear take control.

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.” Psalm 56:3

Trust doesn’t mean you don’t feel the shaking. It means you refuse to let it define the outcome.

Sometimes faith looks like staying seated when everything inside you wants to jump up, fix it, control it, or escape it.

Above the Clouds, the Sun was Always There

Here is something powerful: the sun never stops shining.

Even during the darkest storm, the sun still exists above the clouds. It was never gone, just hidden from view.

The same is true of God’s goodness.

“The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him.” Nahum 1:7

When you finally break through the clouds, when the answers come, the healing begins, the waiting ends, you realize something.

God was steady the entire time.

God never lost control. He never changed direction. He never abandoned the cockpit.

Waiting Above the Clouds Builds Trust for Future Flights

Once you have experienced turbulence and made it through, future flights feel different.

You remember, “I have felt this before and it passed.”

That is how spiritual maturity forms.

“Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Romans 5:3-4

Every season of turbulence becomes a testimony that strengthens you for the next climb.

God Is the Expert of Your Life

We trust the pilots because they are trained, experienced, and proven.

How much more should we trust the God who created the skies themselves?

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” Jeremiah 1:5

“Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” Philippians 1:6

God isn’t guessing with your life. He isn’t improvising. He isn’t confused by your current altitude.

He knows exactly where He is taking you..

If You’re in the Clouds Right Now

If life feels shaky, if prayers feel unanswered, if the clouds feel thick and fear feels loud…

Hear this truth clearly:

You are not crashing. You are climbing.

Stay buckled in. Trust the voice guiding you. Remember, the sun is waiting above the clouds.

“Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.” Psalm 125:1

Smooth air is coming and God is still in control.
