There are days when being a parent feels light and easy, when you hear your child’s laughter fill the air for instance. It is easy to love so fiercely. Then, there are days where the world feels heavy. When your body moves slowly, your thoughts turn inward, and even the simplest task such as pouring cereal and answering questions, feels like mountains.
Unfortunately depression does not knock before it enters, it just sits down beside you uninvited. It constantly whispers that you are not doing enough. The truth is though, that if you are still showing up, even if it is not perfect, even if you are tired or numb, you are still there.
The Weight of Showing Up
On the worst days, showing up might mean simply being in the same room.. It might mean turing on a cartoon while you sit in silence, trying to breathe through the fog. That is okay.
We do not have to be a Pinterest perfect parent, Lord knows I’m not. Our children do not need perfection, they need presence. They need you, messy hair and all, whispering “I love you” even through tears.
I am currently going through a depressive episode, and I feel the tug of guilt. The guilt that says “He deserves a better mom.” I have learned something though, even on the hardest days, love still leaks through. Even when I feel empty, like I do today, Gods strength fills the cracks.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Corinthians 12:9.
That verse reminds me that I do not have to be strong all the time. Sometimes God’s strength shows up most clearly when I am too tired to fake it anymore.
Faith in the Small Moments
Depression may dim your light, but don’t allow it to destroy it. Even in the darkness, there is holy work happening. The work of perseverance, the quiet prayers, the steady heartbeat that refuses to quit.
You may not always feel God’s presence, but He is there. He is there in the tiny hand that reaches for yours. In the soft “Mommy” that pulls you back into the moment. Sometimes faith is not loud hallelujah’s, it is whispered survival.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18.
We are not failing. We are fighting. Even when our fight looks like just making it to bedtime, heaven still sees our efforts.
We are Enough
Your love does not disappear when your joy does. Your care does not vanish when your energy runs low. You are still the safe place your child runs to. You are still chosen for this sacred role, not because you are perfect. Simply because you are you.
So let’s take a deep breath. Let yourself rest without guilt. God does not demand performance. He always offers his presence. Let His love hold you when you cannot hold yourself.
One day the fog will begin to lift, and you will see what your child has seen all along. Even in your weakest moments, you never stopped loving them.
